Upsc prelims Question(2011)
Q.Between India and East Asia, the navigation-time and distance can be greatly reduced by which of the following?
- Deepening the Malacca Straits between Malaysia and Indonesia.
- Opening a new canal across the Kra Isthmus between the Gulf of Siam and the Andaman Sea.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
Options:
A. 1 only
B. 2 only
C. Both 1 and 2
D. Neither 1 nor 2
Answer: B. 2 only ✅
Explanation
- Malacca Strait is already one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. Deepening it would not significantly reduce navigation time/distance, but only ease congestion for large vessels.
- Kra Isthmus Canal (Thailand), if constructed, would create a direct link between the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Siam, bypassing the Malacca Strait. This would substantially cut both distance and time for shipping between India and East Asia.
Kra Isthmus
- Narrowest part of the Malay Peninsula (in Thailand).
- Borders: West → Andaman Sea; East → Gulf of Siam.
- A canal across Kra Isthmus would bypass Malacca Strait.
- This would reduce both navigation time and distance between India and East Asia.
- Hence, Statement 2 is correct.

Important Straits of the World
Strait of Hormuz
- Connects: Persian Gulf (west) ↔ Gulf of Oman & Arabian Sea (southeast)
